Past Connections

$325.00

One of my first fiber art passions was basket weaving where I used dyed rattan reed. I was inspired to weave this material combined with a cotton warp on a floor loom.  This non-traditional use of materials created the fabric of my past. Woven with eight harnesses, the waffle weave pattern creates deep rectangles in a grid and the rattan reed emphasizes the depth and form of the fabric. This fabric is stiff and structured, like my past life as an art teacher, divided into 45 minute periods and ruled by a bell. Now I am a little more free! My current fiber art passion is spinning. Orderly chaos is a good description of my daily schedule and this yarn I spun with wool binding together tiny scraps from other projects. The hand spun yarn is woven and layered on top of the waffle weave.  The stiff gridded background of the past connects with the orderly chaos of my present.

Past Connections is 28” x 34” The weaving is stretched on a simple wooden frame to maintain its shape.
